I interviewed him a couple of days ago for a piece I’m writing for a website. What’s this all about?” “It would be better if we spoke inside, Mr Jackson – the situation is a little delicate at this moment in time.” “Sure, come around to my office; we can talk there. Follow me.” Wil led the Inspector around the side of his end terrace and through another gate, taking him into the back garden and towards his living-ark office. He unlocked the door and slid it to one side. The cool air from the inside washed across them. “Seems like it would be more comfortable to talk in there,” Price said. “Air-conditioning?” “No, it’s all part of the design. Stays warm in the winter and cool in the summer, perfect for working in, an office away from home, although not quite. Pretty geeky too, isn’t it? Would you like a cup of tea?” “Err…yes.” Wil raised an eyebrow in enquiry. “Sorry. Yes to the tea, and your shed. Milk no sugar, please.” “Come in and take a seat.” Wil waved towards a smart red leather sofa centre-piecing a wall of his office. “I’ll put the kettle on.” Price relaxed into the plush sofa and had a good look around the interior. It was clearly, first and foremost, an office of sorts, although from the outside, it looked a little like something out of a science fiction movie. One wall contained a work bench with monitors, telephone, computers and a printer, as well as a disarray of paperwork scattered across the surface. The side where Price was sitting was mostly taken up by the sofa but also had some bookshelves with a mixture of what looked to be science fiction novels crossed with text books and other works of non-fiction. Price watched Wil as he moved towards the back corner of the room, where there was a kettle and a coffee maker. As with the computer hardware and other paraphernalia in the room, these looked rather sedate, but apparently functional. There were a further two doors on the back wall; Price guessed that one probably led to some kind of bathroom, but had no idea what might lie behind the other. In between th! em stood a wood burning stove with a polished, galvanised chimney, which rose to the ceiling; it was showing some blueing from heat at the joins. Price continued to watch Wil; he didn’t look to be a very likely murder suspect, more like an out of place schoolboy. Somewhere between nerd and geek, he hardly looked capable of blowing someone up – although appearances could be deceptive, and judging by the amount of technology and other bits and pieces in this one room alone, he wouldn’t be at all surprised if Wil Jackson had more than one skeleton in his closet. Wil turned from his tea making duties with a cup of steaming brew in his hand, which he passed to Price. After taking a second cup, he settled into his office chair at the work bench. “Now, what’s all this about Arthur Trent?” Wil asked, raising an eyebrow. “When you saw Mr Trent, was it in his office, Mr Jackson?” “It was, down in the Docklands. That big tower, owned by the bank he worked for – great view from forty-four floors up. I still don’t understand what I can help you with, though, Inspector, err, Price, wasn’t it?” “Yes, that’s right, Gavin Price. Mr Trent is dead, sir – murdered by the looks of things, and we’re trying to establish who he saw in the last few days of his life. That’s why I need to speak to you. It seems as though you were one of the last people to actually see him alive.” Suddenly it all made sense to Wil; the news report, and now the policeman on his doorstep asking questions.

Jump Start Your Start-Up

“Write what you know” is perhaps the most quoted saying about writing. Though it is likely apocryphal, it is most often attributed to Mark Twain. P.J. O’Rourke, on the other hand, has said that any creative writing teacher who utters these words should be “confined to a labor camp.”

No matter. When I started forming the plot for Terminal Value, I confess that I did start by writing what I knew—specifically, what it was like to be an entrepreneur who decided to take a gamble and start a company. Make no mistake: MobiCelus bears no resemblance to my firm, and Dylan is not me! However, the experience of taking the plunge of starting an enterprise, and then making the difficult decision of whether or not to sell it, is definitely familiar territory.

I’m often asked for advice from would-be entrepreneurs who seem to think that I know what the magic sauce is that will ensure success. I don’t. No one does. Indeed, data from the U.S. Small Business Administration show that, regardless of the year when they are founded, the majority of start-ups go out of business within five years, and two-thirds are no longer operating after 10 years.

What are the keys to launching a successful start-up? While there are many experts out there who have published thousands of books and articles on this subject, most seem to have differing views (though pretty much everyone will tell you it all begins with a great business plan). By all means, read up. But, based own my own experience, here are seven things to consider:

First, have a very clear vision of exactly what your business will be. One way to do this is to create a unique customer value proposition—basically, a statement that defines your business from the customer perspective. It clearly and concisely identifies your most desirable customers, defining what unique and attractive value you can deliver and how it is that only you are able to deliver it.

Second, make sure you are well financed. How much you need depends on what kind of business you are going to launch. Some require a lot of money, and you may need to seek financing or be backed by venture capitalists. (Warning: taking money from venture capitalists means you are ceding some degree of control of your enterprise to others, which may come back to haunt you!) Others require far less capital. I funded my business myself by not taking any income for the first year. Of course, not everyone can do that.

Third, be dogged about lining up your customers—preferably before you even get into business. Talk to prospects, tell them what you plan to do, gauge their interest, and if possible see if you can get a commitment. This is critical—I’ve met too many entrepreneurs who spend endless hours fiddling with what their logo should look like when they should be taking potential customers to dinner!

Fourth, assemble the very best people you can possibly find. There is an old adage that “A” players attract “A” players, and “B” players attract “C” players. Don’t just hire people for the skills you need; hire people who are so good they scare you. If you think that they could someday take your job, you’re definitely on the right track.

Fifth, run your business very lean. No need for fancy offices, furnishings, or employee perks when you are getting started. What money you do have you’ll want to focus on two simple things: marketing and selling as efficiently as possible, and delivering value that far exceeds your customers’ expectations. Quickly building a strong reputation is everything.

Sixth, stay adaptable. Markets change, innovation is a constant, and your business can easily be demolished by a disruptive technology that makes what you offer no longer relevant. Pay attention to what is going on that could blindside you, not only in your part of the business world but in others.

What is the seventh key to success? Guts. I can’t tell you how many incredibly brilliant people I have met in my life who talk endlessly about starting a business—but never do. Yet there are plenty of successful entrepreneurs who didn’t get a fancy MBA from Harvard. They just did it. What’s the worst thing that can happen? Simple. After a year or two, if it doesn’t work out, you just go get a regular job like everybody else.

Reviews on shorts are so hard to write without giving away the entire thing, but I shall do my utmost best to remain spoiler free. Also making this a bit difficult is that I positively shudder at the thought of having to think about these particular stories again. *shudder* <-- See! That's me shuddering. These are two horrific stories, straight outta someone's nightmares (maybe it was something they ate) and onto my ereader. Almost had me sleeping with the lights on, they did.

Brutal reads like the beginning of an episode of Criminal Minds or a really good murder mystery. One would expect, if this hadn't been a short, that we would have watched or read about the killer's next kills, the policemen who discover them and the crack detectives/psychic/meddling old lady who solves the case. And personally, I'd like to read how the storyline continues and how it eventually plays out.

Perfection reads like the nightmare a rather overweight person would have prior to signing up for counseling at a food addiction rehab center. Though I'm not even sure they would go to the places this story takes you. But I definitely do know that I would not be signing up for this version of perfection.

I also know that I will be signing up to read the sequel to both of these stories in the near future.

I give them each 5 out of  5.

Shortly afterwards, the team (minus the friend they lost in the blaze) suffered some rather unique side effects, each discovering a personal super "power" as it were. Teague's super power-extreme heat and the ability to cause quite a spark *ahem* Teague is my favorite kind of romance hero, a tortured one. After the blaze, his wife commits suicide, his new girlfriend is murdered , a crime for which he is convicted, his ex-brother-in-law gains custody of his daughter....see, tortured. While spending his time in prison, he hatches an insane plan to escape while taking a woman hostage and then using her as ransom in exchange for his daughter. One problem though, he kidnapped the wrong woman.

In a series of events that could only be explained by Mr. Murphy and his laws, the two end up hiding in a hunting cabin, while Teague plans his next moves, and Alyssa still searches for a way out, and then starts searching for answers. What neither of these two were expecting was the degree of their mutual attraction, and the lengths that they both will have to go before being able to find their HEA.

Fever was an exciting read,  loaded with intrigue, action and adventure, all wrapped around a hot and steamy center. And what excited me the most?? This is just the first book in a series! So, yes, more of these hot guys we have met, I do hope, and maybe some more answers to the questions swimming around in my brain.

This was my first novel by Ms. Heaton, but it most certainly won't be my last!

It's a story of forbidden lust and eventual everlasting love that won't easily be forgotten.

Javier is an elite vampire who is a business partner in Vampirerotique, an exclusive erotic theater for vamps.

Lilah is a beautiful human woman, "owned" by a vampire aristocrat, and is thus forbidden territory to all other vampires.

When Javier has no choice but to approach Lilah while she is cleaning a private box, and they are secluded but able to watch the performance on stage, they are both consumed by their feelings for the other. Rather steamy feelings if you catch my meaning...*ahem*

After a night given to pleasures that neither should want or even be capable of, all heck breaks loose when her vampire master comes to reclaim her, and the two must fight to stay together. And I mean this rather literally.

This novella is so full of steamy goodness, I suggest you don't read it in public, or at work, or in front of anyone other than you latest luv. Great idea for a Valentines Day read.

In case you haven't already guessed, this book is H. O. T. hot. Steamy, lusty, drag your man into the nearest room with a locked door...hot. Couldn't put it down if I wanted too, and seriously good idea that I chose to wait until the kids were away for the weekend to read it. That warning above is to be taken to heart, especially if some stocking up is necessary...ahem.

To the outside world, Ella is a once bitten, twice shy recently divorced woman who has a career training hotel front desk staff. What this Ella mask is concealing is every single man's (and even most of the married ones too) hottest wet dream. Ella is smart, beautiful and independent.

Justin is every romance reader's favorite hero, written into one man's awesome package.  (Well, maybe not every romance reader) He's a sexy Texan cowboy, hot bartender and a delicious fireman all wrapped into one. He could populate an entire hot bod calendar all on his lonesome and then some. He's seriously no slouch in the bedroom either, or in the hall, or truck, or bathroom, or parking lot..... He can lasso me and tie me to his bedpost anytime ;)

Ella meets Justin by chance during trivia night at a local bar and she enjoys their instant friendship. Justin, however, begins his slide down that slippery slope towards love after just once witnessing her smile...(awwwwww...) There was one thing holding them back in the beginning, though, and that was the finalization of her divorce.  

Now that her marriage is over, they have been enjoying an affair of convenience, but Justin won't be happy until she is his on a more permanent basis. When she starts to inch away, he tracks her down at her home, and tells her he wants a chance at something more. When his particular brand of coercion leaves her with no imaginable choice, she agrees to spend a long weekend at his home. 

During this time she begins to see that happiness may actually be attainable, and that love can truly happen at first glance. And Justin proves that nice guys don't always finish last, and that sexy cowboys always get their girl.

Truly well written novella, my first from Lissa Matthews, awesome read.
